Personal journal with irregular entries recorded over a long period of time, with autobiography, family register (page 24), lists of marriages and funerals (pages 36-56 and elsewhere) performed by Presbyterian minister J.H. Saye chiefly in upstate counties of Chester, Union, and Spartanburg, S.C., and elsewhere; including references to the school Saye established, 1850, in the former "Brick Academy," with list of students taught, (page 59). Includes mention of various churches in the Bethel Presbetery, including Fair Forest, Cane Creek [Union County, S.C.?], mention of the establishment of Pleasant Grove (Chester District); and later references, ca. 1880s, to Cedar Shoal [Spartanburg, S.C.?] and Fishing Creek [York or Chester County, S.C.?] Presbyterian Churches. Volume includes "Revolutionary Reminiscences," collection of accounts from veterans of the American Revolution, including accounts from Col. John Thomas and family (page 62); Capt. John Savage and Col. Williams (page 67); and Josiah Culbertson (page 59), recorded in "Union District, S.C., 2 Jan. 1840," re Gen. [Thomas] Sumter, the siege of Savannah, Ga., and the Battle of Musgrove [Mill], and skirmishes with Tories including "Plundering Samuel Brown." Includes genealogical information re the Saye, McJunkin, Neely, and Fleming families and others located in the counties of Chester, Union, Sumter, and elsewhere, some of whom relocated to Texas, Illinois, and elsewhere.
